Printed Rear Window Defogger Heating Wire

TEST

Turn on the rear window defogger switch and measure the voltage of the individual heating wires in the center of the window with a voltmeter. If the voltmeter shows 6 V on one wire, the wire to the rear window is in good condition.

If the wire between the center section and terminal (+) is open, the voltmeter shows 12 V.

If the wire between the center section and terminal (-) is open, the voltmeter shows 0 V.

To check for open circuits, slowly move the test lead toward the area where an open circuit is suspected. Find the point where the voltage changes to 0 V. The break is at the point of voltage change.

Measure the resistance of each heating circuit with an ohmmeter between the terminal and the middle of the grid line, and between the terminal and the middle of the adjacent line. In an area with a broken heating circuit, the resistance is twice as high as in other areas. Move the test lead along the affected area to the point where the resistance changes significantly.

REPAIR OF BROKEN HEATING WIRE
The following materials are required:
Conductive Paint
thinner
Tape
Silicone Remover
Use a fine brush:
Clean the window near the broken heated circuit with silicone remover. Clean and apply tape as shown in the illustration. Shake the conductive paint container well and apply three coats with a brush, waiting 15 minutes between each coat. Remove the tape and let the paint dry thoroughly before turning on the rear window defroster. For a better finish, scrape off excess paint with a knife after it has dried (after 24 hours).
