repair procedures

Installation and Removal

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.

  2. Remove the engine undercover.

(Refer to Engine and Transaxle - "Under Hood")

  3. Drain the engine coolant.

(Refer to Cooling System - "Engine Coolant")

  4. Remove the drive belt.

(Refer to Drive Belt System - "Drive Belt")

  5. Remove the water pump pulley (A).

    Tightening torque: 12.7~14.7 N·m

  6. Remove the water pump (A) with the O-ring.

    Tightening torque: 19.6~26 N·m

  7. Installation is the reverse of removal.

8th.

Fill the radiator with engine coolant.

(Refer to Cooling System - "Engine Coolant")

  1. Start the engine and check for leaks.

TEST

  1. Inspect all pump components for cracks, damage, or wear. If necessary, replace the water pump.

  2. Check the bearing for damage, abnormal noise, and roughness. Check rotation. If necessary, replace the water pump.

  3. Check for coolant leakage. If coolant leaks from the vent hole, the seal is damaged. In this case, replace the water pump and seal.

Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting

SYMPTOMS POSSIBLE CAUSES Measurement
Engine coolant leak
  • From the water pump vent hole

VISUAL INSPECTION
  • Check for leaks after warming up the engine for approximately 10 minutes.

  • If coolant continues to leak, the water pump must be replaced.

  • After the leak is eliminated, reinstall the water pump. (Do not replace the pump.)

  • From gasket or bolts

  • Water pump mounting bolts are loose.

  • Tighten the mounting bolts.

  • Check the seals for damage or dust contamination.

  • Replace the gasket and wipe off the dust.

  • From the outer surface of the water pump

  • Check the water pump for material defects or cracks.

  • Check the water pump for material defects or cracks and replace if necessary.

Hurry
  • From bearings

  • From the mechanical seals

  • Impeller is faulty

Inspect with a stethoscope
  • After starting the engine, check for noise with a stethoscope.

  • If no noise is heard, reuse the water pump (do not replace).

  • If noise is heard from the water pump, remove the drive belt and check again.

Check after removing the drive belt
  • After removing the water pump and the drive belt, check the noise again.

  • If noise is heard, reuse the water pump. Check other drivetrain components.

  • If no noise is heard, replace the water pump with a new one.

Check after removing the water pump
  • After removing the water pump and the drive belt, check the noise again.

  • If a malfunction occurs, replace the water pump with a new one.

OVERHEATING
  • Impeller is damaged

  • Loose impeller

Impeller is loose
  • Impeller blade is rusted

  • Check the coolant.

  • Poor coolant quality / maintenance

  • Impeller is disconnected from the shaft

  • Replace the coolant pump.
