Maintenance When Towing a Trailer

~1min read

If the vehicle is often used to tow a trailer, it will require maintenance at shorter intervals. Pay particular attention to the engine oil, automatic transmission fluid, axle lubricant and engine coolant. Brakes are another component that should be checked often. Each of these items is described in this manual, and you can quickly find them using the Index. If you plan to tow a trailer, it is a good idea to review the relevant sections of this manual before setting off.

Remember to maintain the trailer and the hitch as well. Inspect the trailer periodically, following the maintenance schedule supplied with it. It is best to inspect it every day before driving. Above all, make sure that all hitch nuts and bolts are tightened.

CAUTION
  • Because of the higher load when towing a trailer, overheating may occur on hot days or when driving uphill. If the coolant temperature gauge indicates overheating, turn off the air conditioning and stop the vehicle in a safe place to let the engine temperature drop.
  • When towing a trailer, check the transmission fluid more often.
  • If the vehicle is not equipped with air conditioning, install a condenser fan to improve engine performance while towing a trailer.
