If you encounter hazardous driving conditions such as water, snow, ice, mud, sand or similar hazards, follow the suggestions below:

  • Drive carefully and begin braking from a greater distance than usual.
  • Avoid sharp steering maneuvers and sudden braking.
  • If the vehicle is not equipped with ABS, repeatedly apply the brake pedal lightly and release it until the vehicle stops (known as pumping the brakes).
WARNING - ABS If the vehicle is equipped with ABS, do not pump the brake pedal repeatedly.
  • If the engine stalls while the vehicle is in snow, mud or sand, select second gear.

Increase speed slowly to avoid spinning the drive wheels in place.

  • If the engine stalls while the vehicle is on ice, snow or mud, use sand, rock salt, anti-skid chains or any other material that will provide traction when placed under the drive wheels.
    • WARNING - Downshifting With an automatic transmission, downshifting on a slippery road surface may cause an accident. A sudden change in wheel rotation speed may cause the tires to slip. Exercise caution when downshifting on slippery surfaces.
