Jump starting incorrectly can be dangerous. To avoid personal injury or damage to the vehicle or battery, follow the jump starting procedure carefully. If you have any doubts, it is strongly recommended that a qualified technician or roadside assistance service jump start the vehicle.

CAUTION Use only a 12-volt external starting system. Using a 24-volt power source (two 12-volt batteries connected in series or a 24-volt engine-driven generator set) may permanently damage the 12-volt starter, ignition system, and other electrical components. WARNING - Battery Never attempt to check the electrolyte level in the battery, as this may cause the battery to crack or explode, resulting in serious injury. WARNING - Battery
  • Keep the battery away from open flames and sparks. The battery releases hydrogen gas, which can explode if it contacts flames or sparks. Failure to strictly follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury and vehicle damage. If you are unsure about this procedure, seek help from a qualified professional. Automotive batteries contain sulfuric acid. It is poisonous and highly corrosive. When jump starting the engine with jumper cables, wear protective eyewear and take care not to spill acid on yourself, your clothing, or the vehicle.
  • Do not attempt to jump start the vehicle from an external booster battery if the discharged battery is frozen or if its electrolyte level is low. This may cause the battery to crack or explode.

Jump Starting Procedure from an External Booster Battery

CAUTION - AGM Battery (if equipped)
  • AGM batteries are maintenance-free and should be serviced only by an authorized Kia dealer. Use only fully automatic chargers specifically designed for charging AGM batteries to charge an AGM battery.
  • When replacing the AGM battery in the AGM system, use only genuine Kia batteries.
  • Do not remove the battery cover. Doing so may cause electrolyte to leak from inside the battery, resulting in serious personal injury.
  • If the AGM battery is reconnected or replaced, the ISG function will not work immediately.

If you want to use the ISG function, the battery sensor requires calibration for approximately 4 hours with the ignition switched off.

  1. Make sure the auxiliary battery is 12-volt and that its negative terminal is grounded.
  2. If the auxiliary battery is in another vehicle, make sure the vehicles do not touch each other.
  3. Turn off all unnecessary electrical loads.
  4. Connect the jumper cables in exactly the order shown in the illustration.
First, connect one end of the jumper cable to the positive (+) terminal of the discharged battery (1), then connect the other end to the positive (+) terminal of the external booster battery (2).

Next, connect one end of the jumper cable to the negative terminal of the auxiliary battery (3), then connect the other end of the cable to a solid, stationary metal part (such as the engine lifting bracket) away from the battery (4). Do not connect it to any part that moves when the engine is started or near such a part.

Do not allow the jumper cables to contact anything other than the correct battery terminals or proper ground. Do not lean over the battery while connecting the cables.

CAUTION - Battery Jumper Cables Do not connect the negative (-) jumper cable from the external booster battery to the negative (-) terminal of the discharged battery. This may overheat the vehicle's discharged battery and cause it to crack, which may result in battery acid leakage.
  1. Start the engine of the vehicle with the good battery and let it run at 2,000 rpm, then start the engine of the vehicle with the discharged battery.

If the cause of the battery discharge is unclear, the vehicle should be inspected by an authorized Kia Motors dealer.
