Rear Crankshaft Oil Seal
Replacement
PROCEDURE
1. Remove the transmission, referring to subsection 7.1.5 and subsection 7.2.8.

2. The seal can be removed without removing the oil pan or the seal retainer. However, this method is not recommended, since the seal is installed in the retainer with a large interference fit, and the seal or the retainer itself may be damaged, or damage may occur during installation. If you still want to try, remove the old seal with a screwdriver.
3. Lubricate the crankshaft journal and the sealing lip of the new seal with multi-purpose grease and carefully install the seal in place. The sealing lip is very stiff, so when installing it onto the crankshaft, push the seal carefully using a smooth object, such as the end of an extension bar handle. Press the seal into place with light taps. Do not apply hard blows, otherwise the seal may be damaged.
4. The method described below is recommended. However, it requires opening the seal at the rear of the oil pan (refer to subsection 3.1.1.12) and removing the seal retainer.
5. Remove the two rearmost oil pan bolts that thread into the retainer. Using a spatula, separate the seal between the rear of the oil pan and the seal retainer. Remove the bolts, remove the retainer and clean off the gasket residue. Remove the sealant from the oil pan mating surface.
* Cover the open part of the oil pan with clean rags to prevent sealant residue from getting into the pan when the pan is installed during assembly.

6. Place the retainer with the seal on two wooden blocks and drive the seal out from the back side with a screwdriver.

7. Press the new seal into the retainer by tapping with a hammer through a wooden spacer, or using a length of pipe with an outside diameter slightly smaller than the seal diameter.
8. Lubricate the sealing lip of the new seal and the crankshaft journal with multi-purpose grease. Install a new seal retainer gasket on the cylinder block. Apply RTV sealant in drops to the opened part of the oil pan, especially to the surface adjacent to the cylinder block.
9. Carefully slide the seal with the retainer onto the crankshaft journal. The sealing lip is very stiff, so when installing it onto the crankshaft, push the seal carefully using a smooth object, such as the end of an extension bar handle. Press the seal into place with light taps.
10. Tighten the retainer mounting bolts to the torque specified in subsection 3.1.1.1.
11. Carry out the remaining operations in reverse order.
