Camshaft Seal
Replacement
PROCEDURE
1. Remove the cylinder head cover (see subsection 3.1.1.3) and the timing belt (see subsection 3.1.1.6).

2. Hold the exhaust camshaft with a large open-end wrench on the hex shank, and loosen the camshaft sprocket bolt, then remove the driven sprocket.

3. Determine the seal installation depth, then remove the seal from the oil pump housing by prying it out with a small screwdriver or other tool. When removing the seal, do not damage the seal bore or the crankshaft journal surface (if the crankshaft is damaged, the new seal will leak).
4. Clean the seal bore in the oil pump housing and lightly lubricate the outer surface of the new seal with engine oil or multi-purpose grease. Lubricate the seal lips with multi-purpose grease.

5. Carefully press the new seal into place using an installer with a diameter slightly smaller than the seal diameter. The seal can be pressed in with a special installer or a large socket. If no installer is available, a length of pipe of suitable diameter can be used.
6. Make sure the seal has entered the bore evenly and squarely to the same depth it was installed to before disassembly.
* The seal cannot be driven in with a hammer due to lack of space. Use a pry bar, bearing against the engine mount bracket and using it as a lever.
7. Install the drive sprocket and timing belt (see subsection 3.1.1.6). Install the cylinder head cover (see subsection 3.1.1.3).
8. Start the engine and check the seal for leaks.
