Reserve Capacity
The operating time of a power consumer running on battery current can be calculated using the following formula:
Operating time = battery capacity multiplied by vehicle electrical system voltage, divided by consumer power. In practice, however, you should never rely on the full battery capacity, but only on 1/2 to 2/3 of the nominal capacity. For example, the following operating times result:
| Battery | Parking lights, approx. | Parking lights, approx. | Hazard warning lights, approx. |
| 40 Ah | 35 hours | 12 hours | 3 hours |
| 63 Ah | 56 hours | 19 hours | 2 hours |
Effect of Ambient Temperature on the Battery
Batteries react to cooling the more negatively, the less they are charged. Completely discharged batteries are so sensitive that in freezing temperatures they can even freeze and crack. If the battery is fully charged, it tolerates cold relatively well. Before the cold season, it is therefore recommended to check the state of discharge of older batteries.
