V-belt tension
In this manual: Body Electrical System
~1min read
With moderate thumb pressure, the V-belt can be pressed in between the two pulleys as follows:
| Engine | V-belt for | Belt deflection under thumb pressure, approx. |
| 4-cylinder up to Sept. 1991 | alternator | 10 mm |
| All 4-cylinder | water pump, power steering pump | 5 mm |
| All 4-cylinder | air conditioning compressor | 5 mm |
| 5-cylinder | alternator | 5 mm |
| 5-cylinder | power steering pump | 5 mm |
| 5-cylinder | air conditioning compressor | 5 mm |
If a new V-belt is fitted, check its tension again after approx. 100 km and retighten if necessary; new belts stretch more at first.
Poly-V belt tension
The poly-V belt on the 4-cylinder engine, on models produced after September 1991, must be re-tensioned during inspection. So loosen the belt and set the tension according to the procedure described in the next paragraph.
The poly-V belt on the 6-cylinder engine always has the correct tension thanks to the automatic tensioner.
