Battery Charging
Connecting the Battery Charger
PROCEDURE
Connect the positive lead to the positive battery terminal and the negative lead to the negative battery terminal.
The battery may remain installed in the vehicle during charging.
It is not necessary to disconnect the battery cables when using a low-output charger.
The battery cell caps may remain installed. Gas produced during charging can escape through the vent holes in the caps.
The initial charging current should be approximately 10% of the battery capacity (for example, 4 A for a 40 Ah battery) and should decrease automatically during charging.
The battery is fully charged when the acid density does not rise for two hours.
During charging, distilled water partially decomposes. Bubbles of hydrogen and oxygen gas form – a highly explosive oxyhydrogen gas.
Therefore, make sure the area is well ventilated, especially when charging at high current.
Do not smoke or use open flames near the battery while charging.
Explosive gas may ignite from a spark when connecting or disconnecting the charger or the battery cables.
