V-Belt Replacement

This is how the poly-V belt is routed over the pulleys on models equipped with air conditioning.

The figure shows the poly-V belt routing on a model without air conditioning.
PROCEDURE
Never pry a new V-belt onto the pulleys with a screwdriver, because the resulting cuts will predetermine a subsequent belt failure.
Loosen the old belt for replacement.
Now the belt can be removed from the pulleys without difficulty, and the new belt can be easily fitted onto them.
Note: if necessary, other V-belts must also be removed, or the front engine mount must be disconnected.
Finally, tension the belts, drive approximately one hundred kilometers, and then re-tension.
Which V-belt goes where on the Audi 80 can be seen in the table above.

PROCEDURE
Remove the poly-V belt cover.
Fit a 15 mm open-end wrench to the hex of the belt tensioner and move it to the right (sometimes bolts with a star-shaped head are fitted).
Insert a pin (for example, a suitable bolt, etc.) into the hole provided for this purpose and thereby lock the belt tensioner.
Mark the direction of belt rotation with chalk or a felt-tip pen.
Remove the poly-V belt.
When installing, first place the poly-V belt over the drive pulley and guide rollers; the tensioner roller is last.
Lift the belt tensioner again with the wrench and remove the pin.
Install the cover.
