Checking Clutch Driven Disc Thickness
Required tool:
BMW clutch gauge.
Required wear parts:
Only if the check involves a worn clutch: Clutch driven disc.
The clutch is self-adjusting and requires no maintenance. Therefore, clutch wear cannot be determined from pedal travel. The clutch disc thickness is measured with a special gauge. The disc does not need to be removed.
* If the specified gauge is not available, the clutch can be checked as follows: Engage 5th gear, start the engine with the clutch pedal depressed. Engage the clutch and apply throttle. If the engine does not stall, the clutch is worn. This check should not be performed frequently, as it places a heavy load on the clutch.
According to the maintenance schedule, the clutch thickness check is performed every 80,000 km.
PROCEDURE
1. Raise the vehicle and support it on stands. Remove the engine compartment undertray; refer to Engine Compartment Undertray Removal and Installation.
2. Remove the transmission slave cylinder. To do this, unscrew the two mounting bolts (arrow in the accompanying illustration). Do not disconnect the hydraulic line.

3. Insert the BMW gauge into the slave cylinder opening and press in the direction of the arrow (white arrow). Refer to the accompanying illustration.

4. Read the scale (black arrow) on the side marked "B+C". The friction lining must be replaced if the red zone is visible.
