Power Steering Fluid Level Check
PROCEDURE
1. Check the power steering fluid level periodically to avoid steering problems, such as damage to the power steering pump. Proceed as follows.
* Do not hold the steering wheel turned fully to either side for more than five seconds. This may damage the power steering pump.

2. The power steering fluid reservoir is located on the left side of the engine compartment and has a screw-off cap with an integrated dipstick.
3. Park the vehicle on level ground and apply the parking brake.
4. The fluid level may be checked with cold or warm fluid. Warm fluid is approximately +80°C; cold fluid is at ambient temperature.
5. Unscrew the reservoir cap with the engine cooled. Wipe the level indicator on the cap with a clean cloth.

6. Place the cap on the filler neck without screwing it on, then remove it again. The fluid level must be between the marks on the dipstick. If necessary, add fluid. Only fluid approved by BMW may be added. Always add new fluid, since even minor contamination can cause power steering malfunctions.
7. Start the engine and, if necessary, add fluid so that the level is between the marks on the dipstick.
8. With the engine running, turn the steering wheel several times from lock to lock. This bleeds air from the system.
9. Stop the engine.
* Overfilling is permitted by no more than 5 mm above MAX. Remove excess fluid with a clean syringe. Close the cap.
Check the O-rings on the cap. Replace if necessary.
10. Close the reservoir with the cap.
11. If frequent fluid top-up is required, check the hoses and connections of the power steering system for signs of wear and leaks.
12. Check the condition of the drive belt (refer to Drive Belt Condition Inspection).
