Exhaust System Condition Inspection

~1min read

The inspection must be performed with the engine cold, so it is best to perform it before the first drive of the day or no sooner than three hours after the engine has been shut off.

INSPECTION
1. Check the condition of the entire exhaust system, from the engine to the exhaust pipe outlet. Ideally, perform this inspection with the vehicle raised on a hoist, when there is free access from below. If a hoist is not available, raise the vehicle with a jack and securely support it on stands.
2. Check the pipes and pipe connections for signs of leaks, severe corrosion, and damage. Check the condition and secure attachment of all system brackets and hangers.
3. At the same time, inspect the underbody for holes, corrosion, separated seams, and other defects that allow exhaust gases to enter the passenger compartment. Seal all openings with a suitable sealant.
4. The exhaust system, especially its mounts and hangers, is often the source of rattling and other unpleasant noises.

5. Проверьте резиновые держатели на наличие пор, повернув и растянув их. При

5. Check the rubber hangers for cracks, twisting and stretching them. Replace them if necessary. Refer to the accompanying illustration.
6. Rock and pull the pipes, mufflers, and catalytic converter (if equipped). If these components contact body parts or suspension components, replace the exhaust system mounting hardware.
7. Tap the catalytic converter and check whether it contacts adjacent structures anywhere. If there is contact, loosen all mounting bolts. Allow the catalytic converter components to seat in their correct positions. Then retighten the catalytic converter mounting bolts.

Inspection of the inside of the exhaust pipe allows determination of the current operating condition of the engine. The deposits in the pipe indicate the quality of engine tuning. If the inside of the pipe is black and sooty, this may indicate that the fuel system must be thoroughly inspected.
