Cross Traffic Alert
Cross Traffic Alert in the BMW 5 G30 detects vehicles approaching from the side when reversing, which is ideal when backing out of perpendicular parking spaces or from obstructed driveways. Radar sensors in the rear bumper scan the area behind the vehicle and warn visually and audibly when vehicles are approaching. With the corresponding equipment, the area in front of the vehicle is also monitored. The warning display appears on the Control Display and via the lights in the exterior mirrors. Limitations in poor weather, at high speeds or when visibility is blocked must be observed. A useful function that protects against side collisions and relieves the driver in tight traffic situations.
Principle

Two radar sensors in the rear bumper monitor a wide area of traffic behind the vehicle.
When exiting obscured driveways or backing out of perpendicular parking spaces, the system detects road users approaching from the side earlier than is possible from the driver's seat.
The system indicates when other road users are approaching.
The corresponding display is shown on the Control Display, a warning tone may sound, and the indicator light in the exterior mirror flashes.
With the corresponding equipment, the traffic area at the front of the vehicle is also monitored.
For this purpose, two additional radar sensors are located in the front bumper.
Safety information
WARNING The system does not relieve you of your own responsibility to correctly assess visibility and traffic conditions.
There is a risk of accident. Adapt your driving to the traffic conditions. Observe the traffic situation and intervene actively in the relevant situations.

Switch on automatically
If the system has been activated on the Control Display, it switches on automatically as soon as PDC or Panoramic View is active and a gear is engaged.
When reverse gear is engaged, the rear system switches on.
With the corresponding equipment, the front system switches on when a forward gear is engaged.
Switching off automatically
The system switches off automatically in the following situations:
- When walking speed is exceeded.
- With active steering and lane guidance assistant: when a certain driving distance is exceeded.
- While the Parking Assistant is performing a parking maneuver.
Warning
Light in exterior mirror

The indicator light in the exterior mirror flashes when the rear sensors detect vehicles and your vehicle is moving in reverse.
Display in the PDC view

The respective edge area in the PDC view flashes red when the sensors detect vehicles.
Display in the camera view

The respective edge area, arrow 1, in the camera view flashes red when the sensors detect vehicles.
Yellow lines, arrow 2, mark the bumper of your own vehicle.
Audible warning
In addition to the visual display, a warning tone sounds when your vehicle moves in the corresponding direction.
System limitations
The function may be limited in the following situations:
- When the approaching vehicle is traveling at very high speed.
- In heavy fog, rain or snowfall.
- On sharp bends.
- If the bumper is dirty, iced over or has stickers attached.
- With protruding cargo.
- When crossing objects are moving very slowly.
- When other objects are within the sensors' detection range and obstruct the cross traffic.
When the trailer socket is occupied, e.g. when operating with a trailer or bicycle carrier, Cross Traffic Alert is not available for the area behind the vehicle.
Cross Traffic Alert in the BMW 5 G30/G31 enhances safety when backing out and at obscured exits. Two radar sensors in the bumper monitor the area behind and, optionally, in front of the vehicle and warn of approaching road users. Visual displays and audible signals help the driver react in time.
The system is particularly helpful in tight parking spaces or when visibility is limited. It is activated automatically when reverse gear is engaged, or it can be controlled via the menu. Despite technical assistance, the driver remains responsible for checking the surroundings and heeding the system's warnings.
In this way, the BMW 5 G30/G31 makes an important contribution to safety in urban traffic and in difficult visibility conditions.
