Cruise control
The Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go in the BMW 5 VII Gen is a highly developed assistance function for relaxed and safe driving. The system automatically adjusts the speed to the traffic ahead and maintains a constant distance. If necessary, the vehicle brakes to a standstill and pulls away automatically after a short stop. Control is intuitive via the steering wheel, while displays in the instrument cluster show distances and system status. Especially in dense traffic or on longer motorway journeys, this function offers a clear gain in comfort and safety.
Principle
This system allows a set speed to be selected using the buttons on the steering wheel. The system holds the set speed. To do so, it automatically accelerates and, if necessary, brakes automatically.
General
Depending on vehicle settings, the characteristics of cruise control may change in certain ranges, e.g. acceleration is weaker in ECO PRO driving mode.
Safety notes
WARNING The system does not relieve you of your own responsibility to correctly assess the traffic situation. Due to system limitations, the system cannot always respond appropriately on its own in all traffic situations.
There is a risk of accident. Adapt your driving style to traffic conditions. Observe traffic and actively intervene in the relevant situations. WARNING Using the system may increase the risk of an accident in the following situations:
- On winding roads.
- ▷ In heavy traffic.
- ▷ On slippery roads, in fog, snow, rain or on loose surfaces.
There is a risk of accident or damage to property. Use the system only when driving at a constant speed is possible. WARNING The set speed may be accidentally set incorrectly or retrieved.
There is a risk of accident. Adapt the set speed to traffic conditions. Observe traffic and actively intervene in the relevant situations.
Overview
Steering wheel buttons

Switching cruise control on/off
Switching on
Press button on steering wheel.
The indicator lamps in the instrument cluster light up and the marker in the speedometer is set to the current speed.
Cruise control is active. The current vehicle speed is held and stored as the set speed.
DSC is switched on if necessary.
Switching off
Press button on steering wheel.
The indicators go out. The stored set speed is deleted.
Setting the speed
Holding and storing the speed

Press the rocker switch in the interrupted state.
When the system is switched on, the current speed is maintained and stored as the set speed.
The stored speed is shown in the speedometer and briefly in the instrument cluster.
DSC is switched on if necessary.
Changing the speed

Press the rocker switch up or down repeatedly until the set speed is reached.
In the active state, the displayed speed is stored and reached on a clear road.
- Each tap of the rocker switch up to the pressure point increases or decreases the set speed by 1 km/h.
- Each press of the rocker switch beyond the pressure point increases or decreases the set speed to the next tens value on the km/h display in the speedometer.
The maximum settable speed depends on the vehicle.
Interrupting cruise control
Interrupting manually
In the activated state, press the button.
Interrupting automatically
The system interrupts automatically, for example, in the following situations:
- When the driver brakes.
- Steptronic transmission: When selector lever position D is left.
- Manual transmission: When the clutch is depressed for several seconds or released with no gear engaged.
- Manual transmission: When a gear that is too high for the speed is engaged.
- When DTC is activated or DSC is deactivated.
- When DSC is intervening.
- When SPORT PLUS is activated with the Driving Experience control.
Resuming cruise control
An interrupted cruise control can be resumed by recalling the stored speed.
Before recalling the stored speed, make sure the difference between the current speed and the stored speed is not too large. Otherwise, unintended braking or acceleration may occur.
When the system is interrupted, press the button.
Cruise control resumes with the stored values.
The stored speed value is deleted and can no longer be recalled in the following cases:
- When the system is switched off.
- When the vehicle is switched off to ready state off.
Displays in the instrument cluster
Display in the speedometer

- Green marking: System is active, the marking shows the set speed.
- Orange/white marking: System is interrupted, the marking shows the stored speed.
- No marker: system is switched off.
Indicator lamp
- Green indicator lamp: The system is active.
- Indicator lamp grey: the system is interrupted.
- No indicator lamp: The system is switched off.
Status display
The selected set speed fades out after a short time.
Displays in the Head-Up Display
Some system information can also be shown in the Head-Up Display.
The symbol is displayed when the set speed is reached.
System limitations
The set speed is also maintained on downhill gradients. On uphill gradients, the speed may fall below the set value if the engine output is insufficient.
In ECO PRO driving mode, the economical driving style may cause the speed to exceed or fall below the set speed in some situations, for example on downhill or uphill gradients.
The cruise control of the BMW 5 Series G30/G31 offers the highest level of comfort on long journeys. It reliably maintains the set speed and adjusts engine output to reach or hold it. Thanks to integration with the Driving Experience control, the behavior of the cruise control is adapted to the selected driving mode.
The simple operation via the buttons on the steering wheel and the clear display in the instrument cluster make the system easy to use. The system works efficiently and helps the driver concentrate on traffic while keeping the speed constant.
FAQQuestion 1: Will the system brake automatically on steep downhill gradients?
Answer: Yes, the speed is maintained as far as possible, but on very steep downhill gradients, engine braking alone may not be sufficient.
Question 2: Is the system also active in ECO PRO mode?
Answer: Yes, however, slight deviations may occur in favor of lower fuel consumption.
