The Steering and Lane Control Assistant in the BMW 5 G30 provides intelligent support to keep the vehicle within its lane. Using radar sensors and a front camera, the system detects lane boundaries as well as vehicles ahead and performs slight steering movements when needed. Especially on multi-lane roads, the automatic steering support ensures a relaxed driving experience, provided all activation requirements are met. The system also provides supporting steering impulses during lane changes to make the change safe and smooth. Visual feedback in the Head-Up Display provides transparency about driving behavior, while warning messages indicate the limits of the system. The driver always remains responsible for the traffic situation, especially in bad weather, on sharp curves or when the lane markings are unclear.

Principle

The system helps keep the vehicle in its lane. To do this, the system performs supporting steering movements, e.g. when driving through a curve.

General

The system determines the position of the lane boundaries and the vehicle ahead using five radar sensors and a camera.

Depending on the speed, the system orients itself to the lane boundaries or to vehicles ahead.

Sensors on the steering wheel detect whether the steering wheel is being touched.

Safety information

WARNING The system does not relieve you of your own responsibility to correctly assess the traffic situation. Due to system limitations, the system cannot always respond appropriately on its own in all traffic situations.

There is a risk of accident. Adapt driving style to traffic conditions. Observe traffic and intervene actively in the appropriate situations.

Prerequisites for operation

  • Speed below 210 km/h.
  • Sufficient lane width.
  • Above 70 km/h: Lane boundaries on both sides are detected.
  • Below 70 km/h: Lane boundaries on both sides or a vehicle ahead are detected.
  • Hands on steering wheel rim.
  • Sufficient curve radius.
  • Driving in the middle of the lane.
  • Turn signal not activated.
  • Camera calibration process immediately after vehicle delivery is completed.

Switching on/off

Switching on

Press button on steering wheel.

Steering wheel symbol lights up gray.

The system is on standby and does not perform any steering movements.

The system activates automatically when all activation requirements are met, see page 205.

Steering wheel symbol lights up green.

The system is active.

When the system is switched on, the Person Warning with City Braking function and the Side Collision Warning are active.

Switching off

Press button on steering wheel.

The indicator goes out.

The system does not perform any supporting steering movements.

Interrupting automatically

The system automatically interrupts in the following situations:

  • At a speed above 210 km/h.
  • When the steering wheel is released.
  • When there is strong steering intervention.
  • When leaving your own lane.
  • When the turn signal is set.
  • When the lane is too narrow.
  • If no lane boundary is detected for a certain time and no vehicle is driving ahead.

Steering wheel symbol lights up gray.

The system is on standby and does not perform any steering movements.

The system activates automatically when all activation requirements are met, see page 205.

Steering assistance during lane change

Principle

The system additionally supports the driver when changing lanes on multi-lane roads.

Prerequisites for operation

  • Activation requirements of the Steering and Lane Control Assistant are met.
  • Lane boundaries detected.
  • Lane change warning and steering intervention are switched on, see page 172.
  • Speed between 70 km/h and 130 km/h.

Change lane

  1. Make sure the traffic situation allows a lane change.
  2. Push the turn signal lever in the desired direction to the pressure point for short-term indication and hold it there.
After a short time, steering assistance in the desired direction can be felt.
  • Once one wheel of the vehicle has crossed the lane boundary, the turn signal lever can be released. After the lane change, the system helps keep the vehicle in the new lane.
  • Spur wechseln

    Cancel lane change

If the turn signal lever is released before crossing a lane boundary, the system helps keep the vehicle in its original lane.

    System limitations

    General

In certain situations, the system cannot be activated or used effectively.

    Safety information

WARNING Due to system limitations, the system may respond incorrectly or not at all. There is a risk of accident or property damage. Observe the notes on system limitations and intervene actively if necessary.

    Hands on the steering wheel

The sensors do not detect hand contact with the steering wheel in the following situations:

    • Driving with gloves.
    • Steering wheel covers.

    Narrow lanes

The system cannot be activated or used effectively when driving in narrow lanes, for example in the following situations:

    • In construction zones.
    • When forming an emergency lane.
    • In built-up areas.

    Weather conditions

In unfavorable weather or lighting conditions, the following limitations may occur:

    • Reduced detection of vehicles.
    • Brief interruptions when vehicles have already been detected.

Examples of unfavorable weather or lighting conditions:

    • Rain.
    • Snowfall.
    • Slush.
    • Fog.
    • Backlight.

Drive attentively and react to the current traffic situation yourself. Intervene actively if necessary, for example by braking, steering or evading.

The Steering and Lane Control Assistant of the BMW 5 Series G30/G31 offers the driver a high level of comfort and safety by providing supportive steering inputs when cornering or driving on straight stretches. The system uses a combination of radar sensors and a camera to reliably detect lane boundaries and vehicles ahead, keeping the vehicle precisely in its lane.

The integrated lane change support is particularly helpful, relieving the driver on multi-lane roads when changing lanes safely. Operation is simple and intuitive: a light press on the turn signal lever is enough to activate steering assistance. The conditions and limits of the system are clearly communicated so that the driver always remains in control.

In this way, the BMW 5 Series G30/G31 combines modern driver assistance with active safety and reliably supports the driver in a wide range of traffic situations.
