Remote parking. Principle. General. Safety notes. Overview

~3min read

Remote parking in the BMW 5 Series G30 offers a forward-looking way to precisely maneuver the vehicle into tight parking spaces using the BMW Display Key, without the driver being inside the car. Control is via buttons on the key, while sensors and cameras continuously monitor the surroundings. The system moves the vehicle at low speed, up to 1.8 km/h, forward or backward into a space. The function offers maximum flexibility, particularly in narrow garages or where access to the doors is restricted. The driver remains responsible, however: obstacles must be actively recognized and the vehicle stopped if necessary. An intelligent tool for more comfort and new mobility solutions.

Principle

Forward parking into suitable head-in parking spaces, e.g. a garage, and reverse parking out of them is possible by remote control. The driver is not in the vehicle but controls the parking maneuver from outside, using the BMW Display Key and taking responsibility for it.

If there are obstacles, stop the vehicle manually.

Using the BMW Display Key, the vehicle can be moved approx. 1.5 times its length. The maximum speed is 1.8 km/h.

General

The system consists of the following components:

  • Park Assistant.
  • BMW Display Key.
  • Park Distance Control PDC.

Button on the BMW Display Key: For the vehicle to move, keep the button on the side of the BMW Display Key pressed for the duration of the parking maneuver. If there are obstacles, release the button to stop the vehicle manually. The vehicle then stops with an emergency brake application.

If the ultrasonic sensors detect obstacles in the parking space or the end of the parking space, the system stops the vehicle

automatically.

The headlights are switched on for the duration of the maneuver.

Safety notes

WARNING The system does not relieve you of the responsibility to correctly assess the traffic and parking situation. Due to system limitations, the system cannot always react appropriately on its own in all situations. There is a risk of an accident.

Monitor traffic and the parking situation and intervene actively in the relevant situations.

WARNING Unauthorized persons, e.g. children, can set the vehicle in motion with the BMW Display Key when no one is inside the vehicle. There is a risk of an accident. Protect the BMW Display Key against unauthorized use. WARNING When using a trailer hitch, the Parking Assistant may cause damage due to concealed sensors. There is a risk of an accident or of property damage.

Do not use the Parking Assistant when towing a trailer or when using the tow hitch, e.g. with a bicycle carrier. NOTICE The Parking Assistant may steer over or up curbs. There is a risk of property damage. Observe traffic and intervene actively in relevant situations.

Overview

Ultrasonic sensors

Ultraschallsensoren

The four side ultrasonic sensors, arrows, and the ultrasonic sensors of PDC in the bumpers are used to measure parking spaces and determine distances to obstacles.

Cameras

In addition to the ultrasonic sensors, four cameras capture the parking situation during remote control parking.

Remote Control Parking on the BMW 5 G30/G31 combines state-of-the-art technology with practical benefits. Using the BMW Display Key, the vehicle can park itself forward or pull out in reverse – the driver controls the process from outside. This makes maneuvering in tight garages or parking spaces considerably easier and increases everyday convenience.

Thanks to the interaction of ultrasonic sensors and cameras, the vehicle's surroundings are monitored and obstacles are reliably detected. Control is via a button on the Display Key, which must be held down for the duration of the parking maneuver. Speed is reduced to a minimum to ensure maximum safety.

With this system, the BMW 5 G30/G31 impressively demonstrates how digital connectivity and assistance technology can support the driver in complex parking situations.
