The activated carbon canister fuel tank ventilation system is fitted to vehicles with petrol engines. It is an evaporative emission control system which prevents the environmentally harmful fuel vapours in the tank from escaping into the atmosphere: the vapours that escape are stored in an activated carbon canister.
While driving, the stored vapours are fed back into the combustion process in a controlled manner via the purge valve.
As part of regular maintenance, the activated carbon canister system should be visually checked for leaks.
Check the hoses for porosity by bending them. Check that the hoses are correctly seated on their connection stubs by pulling on the hoses.
Replace porous hoses.
