Clutch
When shifting gears, the clutch disengages the drive between the engine and transmission. When starting off, it provides smooth engagement of drive from the engine to the transmission. The clutch consists of the pressure plate, the clutch disc, and the release bearing.
The pressure plate is bolted to the flywheel, which is flanged to the engine crankshaft. The clutch disc is located between the pressure plate and the flywheel and is pressed against the flywheel by the pressure plate. The clutch disc is centered by the transmission input shaft, which engages its splines.
When the clutch pedal is depressed (disengaging), the release bearing is pressed against the diaphragm spring of the pressure plate via the clutch cable and a release lever. This relaxes the pressure plate, and the clutch disc is no longer pressed against the flywheel. The drive connection between the engine and transmission is then interrupted.
Each time the clutch is engaged or disengaged, slight slipping wears off some friction lining from the clutch disc. The clutch disc is therefore a wear part, but its average service life is over 100,000 km. Wear depends mainly on the load (towing a trailer) and driving style.
Because the clutch pedal free play changes as the clutch linings wear, it must be checked and, if necessary, adjusted as part of regular maintenance.
2.0 L engine: The clutch is hydraulically operated. When the clutch pedal is depressed, pressure is built up in the master cylinder. This pressure is transmitted through a hydraulic line to the slave cylinder, which is bolted to the transmission housing. The slave cylinder piston presses the release bearing against the diaphragm spring and lifts the pressure plate slightly. This releases the clutch disc. The clutch hydraulic system uses brake fluid and is supplied from the common brake fluid reservoir. This clutch is maintenance-free because it adjusts itself.
