Transmission Description - Overview. Description and Operation
Overview
This automatic transmission is a 6-speed transmission with electronic shift control. It is designed for use in the transverse powertrain of front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive vehicles.
This transmission has a 4-element torque converter design that includes a TCC and a gear train with 3 planetary gear sets.
The hydraulic control system of this transmission uses 7 electronically controlled solenoids for:
- Shift feel (by controlling mainline pressure and shift pressure)
- Shift Schedule and Timing
- TCC Operation

Transmission Identification Tag
| Item | Description |
| 1 | Transmission Part Number |
| 2 | Bar Code 1 |
| 3 | Assembly Line Shift |

When servicing the transmission, use the transmission identification tag located on the upper part of the transmission case.
Original Solenoid Body Tag
| Item | Description |
| 1 | 13-digit solenoid body strategy |
| 2 | 7-digit solenoid body identifier |
The solenoid body strategy is programmed into the PCM to control shift scheduling, line pressure control (LPC), and TCC. Solenoids are calibrated to prevent harsh shifts. The solenoid body tag on the transmission case contains the 13-digit solenoid body strategy and the 7-digit solenoid body identifier.
Replacement Solenoid Body Tag
| Item | Description |
| 1 | 13-digit solenoid body strategy |
| 2 | 7-digit solenoid body identifier |
When a new solenoid body is installed, a new solenoid body strategy file is downloaded to the PCM. The replacement solenoid body tag is supplied with the new solenoid body and contains the 13-digit solenoid body strategy and the 7-digit solenoid body identifier. The new tag is placed over the original solenoid body tag.
Solenoid Body Identification and Strategy
| Item | Description |
| 1 | 13-digit solenoid body strategy |
| 2 | 7-digit solenoid body identifier |
If the solenoid body strategy printed on the solenoid body connector does not match the solenoid body tag, a new solenoid body must be installed and the solenoid body strategy must be downloaded to the PCM, otherwise harsh shifts will occur.
Solenoid Tape Number
Solenoids are calibrated at the factory and are not all identical. Solenoids can be replaced individually, but only with a solenoid with a matching tape number to the solenoid being replaced. When replacing solenoid(s), the new solenoid tape number must match the original solenoid tape number. The group number next to the 2D matrix bar code on the side of the solenoid will be 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5.
