Symptom Chart

Symptom Chart: Automatic Transmission

The diagnosis in this manual assumes a certain level of skill and knowledge of Ford-approved diagnostic procedures.
REFER TO: Diagnostic Methods (100-00 General Information, Description and Operation).

In most cases, the PCM sets a DTC to aid diagnosis. Refer to the Diagnostic Trouble Code Chart before using the Symptom Chart.

  • Harsh Stop/Start
  • NOTE: TFT must be above 38ºC (100ºF) for the PCM to command the auxiliary transmission fluid pump on.
  • Check the fluid level.
REFER TO: Transmission Fluid Level Check (307-01A Automatic Transmission - 6-Speed Automatic Transmission - 6F35, General Procedures).
If the fluid level is correct, clear all DTCs, then perform the priming procedure: Using the diagnostic scan tool, prime the auxiliary transmission fluid pump. With the scan tool, ignition ON, engine OFF, command TRANS_PMP_CMD to 80% for 30 seconds. Perform a road test until a stop/start event occurs. If the stop/start is harsh, repeat the auxiliary transmission fluid pump priming procedure. Continue the road test and evaluate each stop/start event. Repeat the primary procedure until three consecutive normal stop/start events are achieved. Clear the DTCs. If the concern is not resolved, follow the Harsh Forward Engagement symptom chart.

  • Check the fluid level.
REFER TO: Transmission Fluid Level Check (307-01A Automatic Transmission - 6-Speed Automatic Transmission - 6F35, General Procedures).
If the fluid level is correct, these fluctuations should be considered normal characteristics and do not cause abnormal wear or durability concerns. The hydraulic circuit may partially drain back during extended engine-off periods, and it may take a few applications (2-3 shifts) to bleed air from the hydraulic circuit. No further transmission work should be performed for this condition.
