Checking the Brake Booster Operation/Assembly Leak Tightness

~1min read

Functional Check
PROCEDURE

1. With the engine off, depress the brake pedal several times. Make sure the reserve travel of the pedal (distance between the pedal and the floor) does not change.
2. Hold the pedal depressed and start the engine. If the pedal drops slightly immediately after the engine starts, the vacuum brake booster is operating properly.

Leak Check
PROCEDURE

1. Start the engine and let it run for a couple of minutes, then turn it off. Depress the brake pedal slowly several times. If the pedal travel gradually decreases with each application at first but stabilizes after three or four pumps, the vacuum booster assembly is airtight.
2. With the engine running, depress the brake pedal. Hold the pedal depressed and turn off the engine. If the reserve pedal travel does not change after holding the pedal down for 30 seconds, the vacuum booster assembly is airtight.
