Replacement of Parking Brake Cable(s)
PROCEDURE
1. Chock the front wheels, loosen the rear wheel mounting nuts, then raise the rear of the vehicle and support it on stands.
2. On models equipped with rear drum brakes, remove the brake drum(s) (refer to Rear Drum Brake Shoe Replacement).

3. Loosen the adjusting nut on the equalizer assembly (refer to Parking Brake Adjustment). Disconnect the cable from the equalizer and remove the intermediate retainers from the cable sheath.

4. On models with rear drum brakes, remove the rear brake shoe assembly (refer to Rear Drum Brake Shoes Replacement) and disconnect the parking brake cable from the operating lever on the rear shoe. Depress the locking tabs on the cable sheath retainer and, using pliers or a 12 mm special wrench, release the cable from the brake backing plate.
If the special wrench is not available, a small screw clamp can be used.

5. On models with rear disc brakes, to disconnect the cable from the operating lever, remove the clip and remove the split pin retaining pin (refer to Rear Drum Brake Shoes Replacement). The cable sheath is additionally secured in the bracket by a spring retainer.
6. Unbolt the intermediate cable retainer brackets from the underbody. Remove the cable, noting its routing.
It may also be necessary to remove the bolts securing the rear heat shield of the exhaust system.
7. If necessary, remove the second parking brake cable in the same manner.
8. Install in the reverse order. Be sure to adjust the parking brake drive.
