Throttle Position (TP) Sensor

~2min read

The throttle position sensor provides information that the ECM uses to determine whether the throttle valve is closed, fully open, or in an intermediate position. The sensor is rigidly connected to the throttle valve shaft. The sensor resistance changes depending on the throttle valve position. To power the sensor, the ECM supplies 5 V. The sensor output voltage changes from 0.25 V at minimum throttle opening to 4.7 V at full throttle opening.

Inspection

PROCEDURE

1. Disconnect the connector from the throttle position sensor.

2. Measure the resistance between terminals 1 and 2 of the sensor connector.
Resistance: 0.7–3.0 kΩ
3. Connect the ohmmeter to terminals 1 and 3 of the sensor connector.
4. Slowly open the throttle valve and make sure that the sensor resistance changes smoothly in proportion to the throttle opening.
5. If the sensor resistance differs from the specified value or changes abruptly, replace the sensor.

Torque: 1.5–2.5 N·m

Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor

The camshaft position sensor generates pulses, based on which the ECM identifies cylinder No. 1 and the injector opening timing.
Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor

The crankshaft position sensor provides the ECM with information on the crankshaft position. Based on the output signal of this sensor and the signal from the camshaft position sensor, the ECM determines the ignition timing advance angle and the cylinder to which fuel must be supplied. If there is no output signal from the sensor, the engine will not start.

Inspection

PROCEDURE

1. Disconnect the connector from the crankshaft position sensor.

2. Measure the resistance between terminals 1 and 2 of the sensor connector.
Resistance: 0.486–0.594 kΩ at 20°C

3. If the resistance of the sensor differs from the specified value, replace the sensor.
Clearance between the rotor and the crankshaft position sensor: 0.5–1.0 mm
Torque: 9–11 N·m
