Cruise Control Operation

ESC On Condition

When the ignition switch is in the ON position, the ESC and ESC OFF indicators illuminate for approximately three seconds and then go off. The ESC indicator then comes on.

During Operation

When ESC is operating, the ESC indicator flashes:

• When you apply the brake under conditions that may cause the wheels to lock, you may hear noise from the brakes or feel a corresponding pulsation in the brake pedal. This is normal and means that your ESC is active.
• When the ESC is activated, the engine may not respond to the accelerator as it does under normal conditions.
• If cruise control is being used when the ESC is activated, the cruise control is automatically canceled. Cruise control can be turned on again when road conditions allow. Refer to "Cruise Control System" later in this chapter. (if equipped)
• When driving out of mud or on a slippery road, the engine speed (rpm) may not increase even if you press the accelerator pedal fully. This is to maintain vehicle stability and traction and does not indicate a problem.

ESC OFF Condition

To cancel ESC operation:

• Condition 1

Briefly press the ESC OFF button. The ESC OFF indicator will illuminate and the message "TCS Off" will be displayed. In this condition, the traction control function of the ESC (engine control) is disabled, but the brake control function of the ESC (brake control) remains operational.

• Condition 2

Press and hold the ESC OFF button continuously for more than 3 seconds. The ESC OFF indicator and the message "TCS and VSM Off" will illuminate and a warning chime will sound. In this condition, both the ESC traction control function (engine control) and the ESC brake control function (brake control) are disabled.

If the ignition switch is in the LOCK/OFF position when ESC is off, ESC remains off. After restarting the vehicle, the ESC system will automatically turn on again.
