Description and Operation

Description

The Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKPS) is one of the most important sensors in the engine control system. It detects the position of the crankshaft. If there is no CKPS input signal, the engine may stop. Installed on the ladder frame, this sensor generates an alternating current through the magnetic flux created between the sensor and the target wheel when the engine rotates. The target wheel has 58 slots and 2 missing slots at 360 CA (crank angle). For the ISG type, the ISG function receives reliable crankshaft position information in all operating modes. The CKPS in the ISG function ensures a short engine restart time and efficient combustion.

Operation

[ISG]

Two separate differential channels for speed and direction information, respectively. The phase difference between the two channels provides the direction of rotation information.

Repair Procedures

Inspection

  1. Check the CKPS and CMPS signal waveforms using the KDS.

    Specification: Refer to the Waveform.

Removal

  1. Turn the ignition switch OFF and disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.
  2. Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor connector (A).
  3. Remove the engine room cover. (Refer to Engine Mechanical System - "Engine Room Cover")
  4. Remove the sensor (A) by loosening the mounting bolt. Crankshaft Position Sensor Mounting Bolt: 9.8–11.8 N·m

Installation

  1. Install in the reverse order of removal.

Troubleshooting

Waveform

[Non-ISG]

The waveform above shows typical crankshaft position sensor (CKPS) and camshaft position sensor (CMPS) signals at idle. The PCM controls fuel injection and ignition timing using these signals. In general, the CKPS signal is used to determine piston position, and the CMPS signal is used to determine the top dead center of each cylinder.
