Description and Operation

Description

The Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor (MAPS), installed on the surge tank, is a speed-density type sensor that measures the absolute pressure in the surge tank and outputs an analog signal proportional to the pressure to the ECM. Using this signal, the ECM calculates the intake air volume and engine speed. The MAPS consists of a piezoelectric element and a hybrid integrated circuit that amplifies the element's output signal. The element is a silicon diaphragm type with a pressure-sensitive variable semiconductor resistance effect. With a 100% vacuum reference and intake manifold pressure applied to both sides of the sensor, the sensor outputs an analog signal proportional to the pressure change.

Repair Procedures

Inspection

  1. Connect the KDS to the Data Link Connector (DLC).
  2. Measure the MAP sensor output voltage at idle and with the ignition ON.

Removal

  1. Turn the ignition switch OFF and disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.
  2. Disconnect the MAP sensor connector (A).
  3. Remove the sensor (B) from the intake manifold by loosening the mounting screws. Manifold absolute pressure sensor mounting screw: 6.4 – 8.3 N·m

Installation

  1. Install in the reverse order of removal.
