Description and Operation

Description

The GDI injector is similar to a standard injector, but it sprays fuel at a much higher pressure directly into the combustion chamber and has a swirl disc so that the fuel swirls as it exits the nozzle. This helps atomize the fuel. The ECM controls both the supply circuit (high side) to supply voltage to the injectors and the ground circuit (low side) to supply power to the injectors. Two injectors are also supplied from the same driver set. Since the ignition coils work in pairs of cylinders (1-4 and 2-3), the injectors are also installed in pairs.

Repair Procedures

Inspection

  1. Turn the ignition off.
  2. Disconnect the injector connector.
  3. Measure the resistance between terminals 1 and 2 of the injector.
  4. Make sure the resistance is within specification.

    Specification: 1.43 - 1.57 (23 °C)

Removal

  1. Relieve the residual fuel pressure in the fuel line. (Refer to Fuel System – "Relieve Residual Fuel Pressure in Fuel Line")
  2. Turn the ignition switch OFF and disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.
  3. Remove the delivery pipe and injector assembly. (Refer to Fuel System - "Delivery Pipe")
  4. Disconnect the connector (A), then separate the injector (B) from the delivery pipe.

Installation

  1. Combustion Seal
  2. Rubber Washer
  3. Support Ring
  4. O-ring
  1. Install in the reverse order of removal.

Replacement

Replace the injector combustion seal with a new one to prevent leakage after the injector is removed.
  1. Remove the combustion seal (A) using cutting pliers.
  2. Before installing the O-ring, clean the groove with a clean cloth. Using a brass wire brush, carefully remove all sealant from the injector sealing surface.
  3. Place the seal installation guide (B) (SST No.: 09353-2B000) on the injector tip without damaging the injector tip (A). Press the O-ring (C) with your thumb and index finger along the tapered installation tool until it enters the groove. The entire installation should take no more than 2-3 seconds.
  4. For the O-ring size, first insert the injector into the sizing tool (A) (SST No.: 09353-2B000), then press and rotate it 180° at the same time within the sizing tool.
  5. Remove the injector from the sizing tool by rotating it in the direction opposite to the press-fitting process.
  6. Check the installation of the combustion seal (A).

Troubleshooting

Signal Waveform

The three waveforms below are taken from injectors No. 1 and No. 4. The upper waveform is the high-side (supply side) signal of injectors No. 1 and No. 4, while the middle signal is from the low side (ground) of the No. 1 injector, and the lower waveform is from the low side of the No. 4 injector. The middle waveform is the same as the upper one because there is no ground for the circuit. When there is no current in the No. 1 injector circuit, the injector does not operate and fuel does not flow. The lower waveform shows that ground is supplied and there is a voltage drop across the No. 4 injector. When current flows in the No. 4 injector circuit, power is supplied to the injector and fuel flows.
