Description and Operation

Description

The Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) system consists of a throttle body with an integrated control motor and a throttle position sensor (TPS). Instead of a conventional throttle cable, the accelerator pedal position is used. The Accelerator Position Sensor (APS) is used to receive input from the driver. The ECM uses the APS signal to calculate the target throttle position. The throttle valve is then adjusted by the ECM through control of the ETC motor. The TPS signal is used to provide throttle position feedback to the ECM. Precise control of throttle position is possible with ETC; the need for external cruise control modules/cables is eliminated.

Repair Procedures

Inspection

Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)
  1. Connect the KDS to the Data Link Connector (DLC).
  2. Start the engine and measure the output voltage of TPS 1 and 2 at TP and VOT.
    Item Opening Percentage (%) Output Voltage (V) [Vref = 5 V]
    TP1 THA 8,5 - 11,5 0,43 - 0,58
    THW 88 - 96 4,40 - 4,80
    TP2 THA 88,5 - 91,5 4,43 - 4,58
    THW 2 - 10 0,10 - 0,50
  3. Turn the ignition off.
  4. Disconnect the ETC module connector.
  5. Measure the resistance between terminals 1 and 2 of the ETC module.
  6. Make sure the resistance is within specification.

    Specification: 0.3–100 Ω [20 °C]

ETC Motor

Removal

  1. Turn the ignition switch OFF and disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.
  2. Remove the air cleaner. (Refer to Engine Mechanical System - "Air Cleaner")
  3. Disconnect the ETC module connector (A).
  4. Remove the mounting bolts (B) and remove the ETC module from the engine. ETC module mounting bolt: 9.8 – 11.8 N·m

Cleaning

  1. Remove the ETC module. (Refer to Engine Control System - "ETC System")
  2. Hold the ETC module panel (A) open.
  3. Remove deposits from the throttle body using a soft cloth moistened with cleaning solution.
  4. After cleaning, reinstall the ETC module, then perform the ETC module learning procedure. (Refer to Engine Control System – ETC System – Adjustment)

Installation

  1. Install in the reverse order of removal.

Adjustment

ETC Module Learning Procedure

Be sure to perform the ETC module learning procedure when replacing or reinstalling the ETC module.
  1. Wait 1 minute with the ignition switched ON.
  2. Start the engine and let it idle for 15 minutes.
  3. Wait for 1 minute with the ignition switched off.
  4. Restart the engine and check that the idle speed is stable.
