Description and Operation
Description
Knock is an abnormal combustion phenomenon characterized by unwanted vibration and noise, which may cause engine damage. Installed on the cylinder block, the Knock Sensor (KS) detects engine knocking. When knocking occurs, vibration from the cylinder block is applied as pressure to the piezoelectric element. When knock occurs, the sensor outputs a voltage signal. The ECM retards ignition timing when knocking occurs. If the knock stops after retarding the ignition timing, the ECM advances the ignition timing again. This sequence can improve engine power, torque and fuel economy.

Repair Procedures
Removal
- Turn the ignition switch OFF and disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.
- Remove the intake manifold. (Refer to Engine Mechanical System - "Intake Manifold")
- Remove the delivery pipe. (Refer to Fuel System - "Delivery Pipe").
- Remove the knock sensor (A) after loosening the mounting bolt. Knock Sensor Mounting Bolt: 18.6–24 N·m

Installation
- Install in the reverse order of removal.
