Description and Operation
Description
The Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor (MAPS) is a speed-density type sensor and is installed on the surge tank. It measures the absolute pressure of the surge tank and sends an analog signal proportional to the pressure to the ECM. Using this signal, the ECM calculates the intake air volume and engine speed.
The MAPS consists of a piezoelectric element and a hybrid IC that amplifies the element's output signal. The element is a silicon diaphragm that adapts to pressure and has the piezoresistive effect of a semiconductor. Since vacuum and intake manifold pressure are applied to both sides of the sensor respectively, the sensor can output an analog signal proportional to the pressure change via the silicon.

Inspection
Connect KDS/GDS to the Data Link Connector (DLC).
Check the MAPS output voltage at idle with IG ON.

Removal
Turn the ignition switch OFF and disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.
Disconnect the MAP sensor connector (A).
Remove the mounting screw (B) and remove the sensor from the expansion tank.

Installation
Installation is the reverse of removal.
