Description and Operation
Description
The Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKPS) detects the crankshaft position and is one of the most important sensors in the engine control system. If there is no CKP signal, the engine may stop due to the absence of the CKPS signal.
This sensor is installed on the ladder frame and generates an AC voltage by the magnetic flux field created as the sensor and the target wheel rotate while the engine is running. The target wheel has 58 slots and 2 missing slots at every 360 CA (Crank Angle). In the case of ISG, the ISG function receives reliable crankshaft position information in all operating modes. The CKPS function in ISG provides a short restart time for the engine and efficient combustion.

[NON-ISG]

Operation
[ISG]
Two separate differential channels for speed and direction information, respectively.
The phase separation of the two channels provides information on the direction of rotation.

Repair Procedures
Inspection
Check the CKPS and CMPS signal waveforms using the diagnostic tool.
Specification: Refer to "Waveform"
Removal
Turn the ignition switch OFF and disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.
Raise the vehicle.
Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor connector (A).

Remove the CKP sensor by loosening the mounting bolt (A).
Crankshaft Position Sensor Mounting Bolt:
9,8–11.8 N·m

Installation
Installation is the reverse of removal.
Troubleshooting
Waveform

This example shows a typical crankshaft position sensor (CKPS) and camshaft position. Sensor waveform (CMPS) at idle. The PCM controls injection and ignition timing using these signals.
Generally, the CKPS signal is used to detect piston position, and the CMPS signal is used to detect the top dead center of each cylinder.
