Description and Operation
Description
Knock is a phenomenon characterized by undesirable vibration and noise, and it may cause engine damage. The Knock Sensor (KS) is installed on the cylinder block and detects engine knocking.
When knocking occurs, the vibration of the cylinder block is transmitted as pressure to the piezoelectric element. At this time, this sensor sends a voltage signal exceeding the specified value to the ECM, and the ECM retards the ignition timing angle. If knocking disappears after the ignition timing is retarded, the ECM advances the ignition timing. This sequential control can improve engine power, torque and fuel economy.
