Your vehicle is equipped with a 5-speed or 6-speed manual transmission.

The shift pattern for each transmission is shown above.

When shifting gears, depress the clutch pedal fully, then release it slowly.

Your vehicle is equipped with a device that prevents accidental engagement of reverse gear R. Press the shift lever down and move it to the R position.

WARNING

Do not brake suddenly with the engine when driving at high speed or on slippery road surfaces: Downshifting when driving on wet, snowy or icy roads, or at high speed, causes the drive wheels to brake suddenly through the engine, which is a safety hazard. A sudden change in wheel speed may cause the tires to skid. This may lead to loss of control of the vehicle and, as a result, an accident.

Make sure you have selected first or reverse gear and that the parking brake is applied before leaving the vehicle. Otherwise the vehicle may move and cause an accident.

CAUTION

  • Do not rest your foot on the clutch pedal except when changing gears. Do not use the clutch pedal to hold the vehicle on a slope. Driving with the clutch pedal slightly depressed will cause unnecessary wear and damage to the clutch.
  • Do not apply excessive sideways force to the gear shift lever when downshifting from fifth to fourth gear. This may cause second gear to engage accidentally and result in damage to the transmission.
  • Make sure the vehicle has come to a complete stop before moving the lever to the R position.
Otherwise, the transmission may be damaged.

CAUTION

  • For vehicles with instrument cluster type C*1: If the engine speed is close to exceeding the permissible limit, an audible signal sounds.

See "Engine Overspeed Warning" on page 7-51.

To determine which type of instrument cluster your Mazda is equipped with, see "Gauges and Meters" on page 4-26.

  • If shifting into reverse is difficult, move the lever to the neutral position, release the clutch pedal and try again.

  • (With i-stop) If the engine has stopped due to stalling, it can be restarted by depressing the clutch pedal within 3 seconds after it stopped.

The engine cannot be restarted, even when the clutch pedal is depressed, under the following conditions:

  • The driver's door is open.

  • The driver's seat belt is not fastened.

  • The clutch pedal was not fully released after the engine stalled.

  • The clutch pedal was pressed before the engine had completely stopped.
