The only ignition-related components are the glow plugs, which are used to preheat the combustion mixture during initial start-up. Voltage is applied to the glow plugs when the ignition key is turned to the glow position. Supply voltage is at least 11.5 V, and the plugs heat to over 1000 °C within a few seconds. Heating time depends on the current engine temperature. If the engine does not start immediately, the circuit opens but closes again when the ignition key is turned to the glow position. Glow plugs cannot be repaired and must be replaced if damaged. Glow plugs are located in the cylinder head. Remove the nuts from the glow plugs and remove the remaining components. Disconnect the glow plug connectors and remove the plugs with an extension socket. When installing, tighten the glow plugs to 13 N·m.
