Operating the Vehicle on Diesel Fuel
At certain temperatures, crystals form in diesel fuel, making the fuel so thick that it cannot pass through the filter. To prevent these malfunctions, fuel stations sell fuel that corresponds to the specific season. At low temperatures, fuel with better cold flow properties is sold, which prevents it from thickening. Fuel sold in summer causes problems already at -2 °C, whereas winter fuel operates normally down to -15 °C. In transitional periods, additives are introduced into the fuel to ensure operation at temperatures down to -8 to -10 °C.
Winter operation problems occur under the following conditions:
– the temperature drops below -15 °C;
– the vehicle has not been operated for a long time, is needed in winter, and summer diesel fuel may have been put into the tank;
– refueling at a station with fuel not intended for winter operation.
If necessary to ensure normal engine operation at temperatures below -15 °C, add up to 30% regular gasoline to the fuel tank, depending on the expected temperature. However, since this mixture adversely affects the engine, refuel with regular diesel fuel at the first opportunity. The engine starts more easily on a diesel-gasoline mixture.
