Crankshaft and Flywheel
GENERAL INFORMATION
Work on the crankshaft and related components is performed in the same way as for gasoline engines. Use the specifications and adjustment table, as it contains different data for clearances, main bearing journal and crankpin diameters, thrust half-washer thickness, end play, etc. Cap bolt tightening torques also differ. The illustration Diesel Engine Crank Drive Installation shows the crank drive components.
Note the oil spray nozzle and the oil return check valve, which are not installed on gasoline engines. Both parts can be removed. Removal of the oil pump is described in subsection 3.2.16.1. Main bearing clearance is measured as described in subsection 3.2.5, but when installing standard-size bearing shells, shells with the same numeric marking must always be fitted. The back of the bearing shells is marked with the numbers 1, 2 or 3. The same numeric marking is stamped on the cylinder block on the flywheel side for the corresponding main bearing. If the same bearing shells are reinstalled, they must be fitted in their original positions, since they have already run in with the journals.
