Piston and Connecting Rod Assembly

~1min read

GENERAL INFORMATION

When assembling the pistons and connecting rods, observe the following instructions:
The arrow on the piston crown (either stamped, or on a new connecting rod with an arrow) must face the front of the engine.
The "VORN" mark on the connecting rod must face the front of the engine. There is a small projection on the connecting rod near the bearing, which must be positioned toward the front of the engine.
The cylinder number indexes on the connecting rods and bearing caps must match.

PROCEDURE
1. Using snap ring pliers, install one of the snap rings into the piston pin bore. The ring must seat fully in the groove.
2. Heat the piston on an electric hot plate or in hot water to approximately 80° C, lubricate the piston pin and piston pin bore with engine oil, and press the pin in with your thumb through the correctly assembled piston and connecting rod until it contacts the snap ring on the other side. Install the second snap ring into the piston pin bore.
3. Check that after assembly the piston can pivot freely on the connecting rod in both directions.
4. Install both compression rings and the oil control ring. Both compression rings can be installed upside down by mistake. To prevent this, the letters "T" or "N" are marked on one side of each ring; after installation these letters must be visible from the piston crown side (top).
