Diesel Engine

Diesel Fuel Injection System

~1min read

GENERAL INFORMATION
Cleanliness is an essential requirement for all work on the diesel engine. Always clean the union nuts of the high-pressure line before loosening them. The high-pressure fuel pump cannot be disassembled or repaired. If faulty, replace it. Adjustment of the high-pressure fuel pump requires special tools and fixtures, and it must be performed in a workshop. Diesel engines operate with either direct injection or indirect injection, i.e., fuel is injected into the prechamber in the cylinder head, which is connected to the combustion chamber. Combustion begins in the prechamber, and under the resulting pressure, fuel particles are carried into the combustion chamber, where they burn completely.
Precautions when working on the injection system
When performing any repair work on the injection system, regardless of its scope, observe cleanliness. Pay particular attention to the following:
All work on the injection system must be performed under conditions of absolute cleanliness. Perform work outdoors only on windless days to prevent dust from entering the system.
Before loosening union nuts, carefully wipe them with a clean rag.
Place all removed parts on a clean workbench and cover them with paper or plastic sheeting. Do not cover parts with lint-producing rags. If repair is not performed immediately, cover all open or partially disassembled injection system parts, or store them in closed containers.
Check parts for cleanliness before installation.
Do not use compressed air to blow out engine parts when the injection system is open.
If possible, do not move the vehicle with injection system parts removed.
Do not allow diesel fuel to contact hoses. If this occurs, wipe the hoses off immediately. Hoses damaged by diesel fuel contact must be replaced.
