Timing Belt Replacement - 6-Cylinder Engine

~2min read

The work procedures are described here; however, this work cannot be performed at home without special tools.

PROCEDURE

Remove the V-ribbed belt together with the tensioner (refer to Generator).

Remove the timing belt guard cover on both sides (see above in this chapter).

Turn the engine to TDC of the ignition timing for the No. 1 cylinder. The marks on the crankshaft pulley and the timing belt guard cover must be aligned, and the large holes of the camshaft sprocket locking plates must face each other toward the center of the engine.

Remove the ignition timing sensor from the cylinder block and install special tool 3242 (crankshaft locking tool) in its place. The tool must engage the rear hole of the crankshaft. Tighten lightly.

Remove the crankshaft V-ribbed belt pulley, unscrew the timing belt guard cover from below.

Mark the direction of timing belt rotation for installation. Keep the direction of rotation when the belt has already been used.

Install special tool 3243 (camshaft locking tool) on the camshaft locking plates.

Loosen the camshaft sprocket bolts by three turns.

Remove special tool 3243 again.

Remove both camshafts from the tapers. Use a puller with claws. Position the claws on the back of the timing belt sprocket; the bolt remains as it is (loosened by three turns).

After the preliminary work, adjustment begins:
If the timing belt needs to be replaced, do this immediately.

For the further work, the timing belt must be fitted.

Install special tool 3243 (camshaft locking tool) on the camshaft locking plates again.

Check the special tools again for correct installation.

The camshaft sprockets must be seated on the taper so that they rotate together with the shaft but do not wobble from side to side (bolt tightened by hand).

Now tension the timing belt.

Tighten the camshaft sprocket bolts to 70 N·m.

Remove the special tools.

Reinstall the removed parts.
