Camshaft Removal

~2min read

This work is relatively easy to perform on models with 4- and 5-cylinder engines. When working on a 6-cylinder engine, special tools will be required for the final installation of the timing belt.

PROCEDURE

Remove the upper timing belt guard cover.

Set the crankshaft to TDC of the ignition timing for the No. 1 cylinder (also see above in this chapter).

Remove the timing belt sprocket. When loosening the bolt, hold the sprocket with a holding bar (for example, holding bar 3036). For the 6-cylinder engine, loosen the timing belt sprocket with a puller.

Remove the cylinder head cover.

Loosen the timing belt (see Timing Belt Tensioning) and remove it from the camshaft timing belt sprocket.

Remove the auxiliary vacuum pump for the brake booster from the cylinder head (5-cylinder engine only).

On the 6-cylinder engine, unscrew the Hall sensor housing on the left cylinder head.

4- and 5-cylinder engines: loosen the bearing caps in a crisscross sequence, first bearing caps 1 and 3 (viewed from the front), then bearing caps 2 and 4.

6-cylinder engine: loosen the bearing caps in a crisscross sequence, first bearing caps 2 and 3 (viewed from the front), then bearing caps 1 and 4.

When installing, note the following: 4- and 5-cylinder engines: install the camshaft so that the cams of the No. 1 cylinder point evenly upward.

6-cylinder engine: install the camshaft so that the locking plate's large hole faces the opposite cylinder head.

All engine types: the bore of the bearing cap is not centered; pay attention to it during installation.

Install the camshaft bearing cap on the corresponding bearing according to the markings.

4- and 5-cylinder engines: tighten bearing caps 2 and 4 first, alternately in a crosswise sequence, then bearing caps 1 and 3. Tightening torque: 20 N·m.

6-cylinder engine: tighten bearing caps 1 and 4 first, alternately in a crosswise sequence, then bearing caps 2 and 3. Tightening torque: 20 N·m.

4- and 5-cylinder engines: tighten the camshaft timing gear (if removed) to 65 N·m. Installation position: the key on the camshaft must align with the slot in the timing gear bore.

6-cylinder engine: install the camshaft gear with the locking plate and tighten to 70 N·m.

All engine types: be sure to check the valve timing adjustment.

After installing the camshaft, do not start the engine for 30 minutes so that the hydraulic tappets can settle.
