Inspection of Removed Cylinder Head

~1min read

All engine types
PROCEDURE

Remove the old cylinder head gasket. The sealing surfaces on the cylinder head and cylinder block must be absolutely clean, with no gasket residue. Do not scratch the soft sealing surface of the cylinder head with a hard tool. Grooves may cause subsequent damage to the cylinder head gasket.

Check the cylinder head for distortion (especially important if the cylinder head gasket has failed due to overheating).

Place a long metal straightedge or a precision metal square lengthwise on the cleaned cylinder head sealing surface.

Use a feeler gauge to check whether there is distortion greater than 0.1 mm at any point. If so, the cylinder head must be resurfaced before installation.

The cylinder head may only be machined within limits. The minimum height, measured from the upper to the lower sealing surface, must be maintained: 132.6 mm for the 4-cylinder engine and 132.75 mm for the 5- and 6-cylinder engines.
