Break-In of a New Engine
During the first 1000 km, the moving parts of the engine (pistons and cylinders; plain bearings and shafts) must be allowed to run in. This should take place under low load and low engine speed. Engine output and service life depend on it. Therefore:
Do not press the accelerator pedal fully down; if the vehicle has an automatic transmission, avoid full-load positions and do not depress the accelerator pedal abruptly to the stop. Maximum engine speed: 4200 rpm!
Do not exceed 4200 rpm until the engine has reached operating temperature; when the engine is cold, shift up earlier.
During the first 1000–1500 km, the engine should be gradually accelerated to maximum speed or the maximum permissible engine speed (briefly 6300 rpm).
Note: everything said here about a new engine must be observed even more strictly for an engine undergoing running-in after an overhaul, which, as is known, reacts more sensitively to incorrect driving style.
