Removing the cylinder head cover

~1min read

PROCEDURE

4-cylinder engine: on engines with 66 kW output, remove the air filter.

Disconnect the crankcase breather hose. Disconnect the wiring harness, if equipped.

Loosen the throttle cable and pull it out of the bracket.

Unscrew the retaining nuts.

Remove the stiffening plates.

Lift off the cover.

If necessary, remove the oil deflector.

5-cylinder engine: disconnect the brake booster hose from the intake manifold.

Remove the upper part of the intake manifold and the injection nozzles (see chapter "KE-III-Jetronic Injection System").

Remove the idle stabilization control valve.

Unscrew the retaining nuts and remove the stiffening plates.

Remove the cover.

6-cylinder engine: remove the engine guard.

Unscrew the locking bolts.

Lift the cover slightly.

If necessary, remove the oil deflector.

When installing, fit a new gasket.

4- and 5-cylinder engines: do not forget the sheet-metal stiffening plate under the retaining nuts.

6-cylinder engine: lightly lubricate the cylinder head cover gasket on both the inner and outer sides with anti-friction silicone compound D 007 000 04.

Apply a small amount of "Silimate" AMV 174 004 01 (Audi parts supply) to all four sides between the cylinder head gasket and the camshaft bearing cap. Make sure the oil hole at the bottom of the camshaft bearing cap does not become blocked.

All engine types: tighten the nuts or bolts to 10 N·m in a crisscross pattern, starting from the center of the cover.
