Cooling and Heating Systems

Heating system

~1min read

Dampness on the carpet under the heater core, or steam coming out of the air ducts, indicates a heater core leak. Remove the heater core (refer to Heater Core Removal and Installation) and replace it with a new one (the heater core cannot be repaired).

If the heater does not provide adequate heating of the air supplied to the cabin, one of the following may be the cause:

a) The thermostat is stuck in the open position, preventing engine coolant supplied to the heater core from reaching normal temperature;
b) The coolant circuit is restricted, blocking coolant flow to the heater core. Feel the hoses connected to the fittings on the rear bulkhead of the engine compartment - both should be hot; otherwise the circuit is restricted (hoses, heater core, or heater control valve blocked). Disconnect the hoses and perform a reverse-flush of the heater core. Disconnect and flush both hoses beforehand;
c) If the heater core cannot be restored by flushing, replace the unit.
