Sensor Inspection and Replacement
PROCEDURE
See the warnings at the beginning of the Fuel System Pressure Relief section.
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery.
If the vehicle is equipped with a coded audio system, make sure you have the correct code to reactivate the audio system before disconnecting the battery!
2. Remove the fuel pump assembly with the fuel level sender from the tank (refer to Fuel Pump Removal and Installation section).

3. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the terminals of the sender assembly connector.
Select the 200 ohm range on the ohmmeter. Record the meter readings at the two extreme positions of the fuel level sender float. The resistance change as the float moves must be smooth, without jumps or dead spots.
4. With the tank empty (float in the lowest position), sender resistance must be 105 - 107 ohms.
5. With the float in the highest position, the ohmmeter reading must be 3 - 5 ohms.
6. If the above test results are unsatisfactory, replace the fuel level sender.
REPLACEMENT
PROCEDURE
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
If the vehicle is equipped with an audio system with an anti-theft code, make sure you have the correct code to reactivate the audio system before disconnecting the battery!
2. Remove the fuel pump/fuel level sender assembly from the tank (see Fuel Pump Removal and Installation).

3. Disconnect the wiring harness of the fuel level sender unit from the base of the assembly.

4. Remove the attaching screws and separate the fuel level sender from the fuel pump assembly mounting bracket.
5. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to replace the sealing gasket installed under the assembly mounting flange.
