The fuel system consists of the fuel tank with the electric fuel pump installed inside it, the fuel pump relay, the fuel rail with injectors, the fuel pressure regulator, the air cleaner assembly and the throttle body. All models described in this Manual are equipped with an electronic fuel injection system.
Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) System
In the PGM-FI system, electrical pulses of precisely controlled duration are used to control fuel injection through the injectors directly into the intake port of each engine combustion chamber. The timing and duration of each injector opening is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). The PCM continuously monitors various engine operating parameters and, based on the incoming information, determines the required amount of fuel to be injected into each intake port. In this system the throttle body serves only to control the air supply to the engine. Because each cylinder has its own injector, this design allows very precise control of the air-fuel mixture.
