Fuel pump and fuel lines

~1min read

Fuel is supplied from the fuel tank to the injection system, and excess fuel is returned to the fuel tank, through two metal lines routed under the underbody of the vehicle. The submersible electric fuel pump is located inside the fuel tank and is combined into a single assembly with the fuel gauge sender unit. The evaporative emission return system returns fuel vapors to the fuel tank through a separate return line. Access to the fuel pump/fuel gauge sender unit assembly is gained through the luggage compartment by removing the plastic cover.

The PGM-FI main relay (fuel pump relay) is mounted on a bracket under the instrument panel on the driver's side, to the left of the steering column. Several different electrical circuits control relay operation. One of these circuits receives battery voltage from the ignition switch. The second circuit is connected to the PCM, which energizes the relay for one second. While cranking the engine, the PCM grounds the relay until the crank position sensor (CYP) outputs the appropriate signal (see Engine Control chapter). If no reference pulses are received for two to three seconds, the pump shuts off. The third circuit de-energizes the relay when the clutch pedal is released (manual transmission models) or when the AT selector lever is moved out of the "P" position. Overload protection for this circuit is provided by a 7.5 A fuse.
