Fuel Rail and Fuel Injectors - Removal and Installation

See the warnings at the beginning of the Fuel System Pressure Relief section.

The fuel rail on 4-cylinder engines can be removed without removing the air intake plenum. On V6 engines, the intake plenum must be removed to access the left and right cylinder bank fuel rails. Both fuel rails can be removed as a single assembly together with the injectors installed in them.
REMOVAL
PROCEDURE

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

If the vehicle is equipped with an audio system with an anti-theft code, make sure you have the correct code before disconnecting the battery!
2. Relieve the fuel system pressure (see Fuel System Pressure Relief section).
3. On V6 models, remove the access covers from the upper part of the engine (see Engine section).
4. On V6 models, remove the air intake plenum (see Engine section).

5. Disconnect the wiring harness from the fuel injectors.

6. Disconnect the fuel return hose from the fuel pressure regulator.

The fuel return line is smaller and is secured to the regulator fitting with a small spring-type clamp, while the fuel supply hose (pressure line) is bolted to the fuel rail.
7. Disconnect the ground strap from the fuel rail.
8. Disconnect the fuel supply line from the fuel rail.

9. Remove the mounting nuts/bolts and remove the engine fuel rail.

On V6 models, the fuel rails for both cylinder banks must be lifted out simultaneously.

10. Remove the injector(s) from their sockets in the fuel rail.

11. Remove and discard the old O-rings and cushion rings/washers.

It is recommended to replace all O-rings/washers used with the injectors regardless of their condition.
INSTALLATION
PROCEDURE

1. Lubricate the new cushion washers with clean engine oil and install them on the fuel injectors.
2. Install the new O-rings (also lubricated with engine oil), then insert the injectors into their sockets in the fuel rail.
3. Lubricate the new seat O-rings with engine oil and insert them into the injector seats in the intake manifold.
4. Install the fuel rail assembly with injectors onto the intake manifold. Tighten the mounting nuts (4-cylinder models) to the specified torque. On V6 models, tighten the mounting bolts securely.
5. Install the remaining components in the reverse order of removal.
6. After installation, without starting the engine, turn the ignition ON for a few seconds to activate the fuel pump and build up fuel system pressure. Repeat this two or three times, then check the fuel lines, fuel rail and injectors for signs of leaks.
